Tour #11

The first stop in this plan that starts at night is San Antonio Boutique Hotel, located in one of the most traditional areas of the city, also known for its varied gastronomic and cultural offer.

On the morning of the first day we will get up early and we will go towards Popayán, also called the “White City” (Ciudad Blanca) for its colonial architecture. This city is also known for its rich gastronomy. In the surroundings of this city, capital of the Cauca province, we will do birdwatching on the first day of our tour, to appreciate different species of birds, which have made this area sometimes deserving the first place in the Global Big Day, one of the most important bird watching counts in the world.

We will spend the night in Popayán and next day, we will head early to the town of Coconuco, in the municipality of Puracé, whose National Natural Park receives birds such as the Condor of the Andes, and the Yellow-eared parrot, among more than 150 species of birds that roam the area. We will spend the night in Coconuco.

The next day we get up early to head to Cerro de la Eme, a place near Popayán, where more than 100 species of birds have been sighted, such as the crested oropendola or cornbird, the common chiffchaff, and the golden pigeon, among other species. The same day we will return to Cali to rest at night at the Hotel Boutique San Antonio.

The morning of the first day of this tour will have as its destination the Sonso lagoon, recognized as an area of interest for the conservation of birds (AICA) at an international level due to its unique character, is the first stop of this incredible three-day tour. In this place, located in the heart of Valle del Cauca’s department, you can find a great diversity of bird species, including resident and migratory birds from North America and other regions. Bird watchers can easily appreciate many of the 162 species of birds among which are the marsh vulture (Anhima cornuta), the Iguaza Maria (Dendrocygna bicolor), the osprey (Pandion haliaetus), or the cattle egret (Bulbucus ibis), to mention only a few names.

Nearby is the Yotoco Forest Nature Reserve, an area that stands out for being the habitat of important plant and animal species, which is home to more than 150 species of birds that share this space with animals as diverse as howler monkeys, the "Monarch" butterfly and armadillos, e.t.c.

At the end of the day we will return to San Antonio Boutique Hotel to rest and prepare for the next day of this tour.

The next day we will change the climate and we will head to one of the wonders offered by the diversity of thermal floors that exist in Colombia: The Pacific region, where the San Cipriano Natural Reserve awaits us, a territory with 3 kilometers of vegetation, which has a river of crystalline waters that flow into the Pacific Ocean, located one hour from this reserve. In San Cipriano, more than 400 species of birds have been seen, which can be appreciated from the early hours of the morning, such as the arasari and the toucan pechigualdo, just to mention some of the birds typical of the area. The great biodiversity of this place amazes both locals and visitors, who will surely take away a unique experience and a magical memory for their countries of origin.

La gran biodiversidad de este lugar maravilla a propios y visitantes que de seguro se llevarán una experiencia única y un mágico recuerdo para sus países de origen.

In the evening we will rest in the village of El Queremal, very close to the destination that will be waiting for us the next day: the farm 'El Descanso', located 55 kilometers from Cali, one of the best places in Colombia for bird watching. There, Dora Londoño, the owner of the place, takes care of hundreds of birds that fly between the mountainous area that becomes the ideal space where bird watching lovers arrive to appreciate many of the almost 500 species of birds that give even more life to the Valle del Cauca’s natural environment. Species such as the Barbetted Toucan (Semnornis ramphastinus), the Red-breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola jucunda), or the Pacific Ocean Bugle (Anisognathus notabilis), make this place the second destination with the greatest number of species in the Valle del Cauca department.

Once we finished this wonderful experience, we will return to San Antonio Boutique Hotel to rest and get ready for the next day of this tour.

The next morning, we will continue the tour through the village of Pance, in the surroundings of Cali. There we will visit the El Topacio Environmental Education Center, a paradise bathed by waterfalls, rivers and streams, which is renowned for its abundant biodiversity, with numerous species of birds, reptiles, insects, flora and fauna, as well as more than 40 types of medicinal plants. A short distance from El Topacio, in the same village of Pance, are located Villa Cielo and Anahuac reserves. In those places and in just a few meters of walking, we will be able to meet with many species of birds such as ravens, tiles, the honey bee queen or the different species of tanagers that stand out with their exotic colors among the extensive vegetation of the area.

We will spend the night in the Anahuac reserve, where the next day we will enjoy seeing the birds from the area. At the end of the day we will return to the Boutique Hotel San Antonio to rest and prepare for the next day.

(Plan A) On the fifth day we will take a tour of the village of Dapa, a few kilometers from Cali. There we will visit the Minga Ecolodge, a forest reserve crossed by the Bitaco River ideal for bird watching as it has more than 300 species, four of them endemic. Almost twenty species of hummingbirds and up to 30 species of tanagers, among which the multicolored tanager stands out, can be easily watched and photographed among this area.

(Plan B) On the fifth day we will take a tour of Tenerife, located in the central range of the Colombian Andean Mountains, an area that can reach temperatures ranging from 8°C to 21°C. This mountainous area is ideal for bird watching: species such as parrots, toucans, woodpeckers and other kinds of birds, some of them endemic, fly in this natural environment that allows us to appreciate the beauty of the birds throughout the day.

At the end of the day we return to San Antonio Boutique Hotel to rest and prepare for the last day of this tour.

At Kilometer 18, only 30 minutes from Cali, we will visit the Alejandría farm, a paradise at 1,800 meters above sea level, an ideal location to see tanagers, sylphs, sparrows, tiles, hummingbirds and even eagles, while connecting with nature, the humid and lush green typical of the area known as the cloud forest where a temperature of approximately 18 degrees prevails.

That will be our last stop before returning in the late afternoon to Cali, where we finish our tour.
