Tour #6

The first stop in this plan that starts at night is San Antonio Boutique Hotel, located in one of the most traditional areas of the city, also known for its varied gastronomic and cultural offer.

We will get up early in the first day of this tour and head to the Otún Quimbaya Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, located in the Central Colombian mountain range, about 15 minutes from the city of Pereira. In this area, which is characterized by its great biological diversity, and where nearly 90% of the protected area corresponds to natural forests, you can see birds such as the Mountain Toropisk (Pyroderus scutatus), the Rufous-headed Tororoi (Grallaricula cucullata) and the Giant Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes promeropirhynchus).

Once the day is over in the Otún Quimbaya Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, we will move on to Salento, one of the most representative towns of the Colombian coffee culture landscape, adorned by its colorful houses, steep streets where jeeps, the most traditional car in that region. We will spend the night there to get to know the magic of the coffee traditions.

The next day we will visit, just a few kilometers away, the Cocora Valley, home of the Wax Palm, a plant recognized as the Colombia national tree and the tallest of its kind. There, between the palms and the different shades of green in that valley surrounded by high mountains, you will be able to see birds as the Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus) or Messenger of the Sun; the Swallow-tailed Toche (Ramphocelus flammigerus) or the Barranquero (Momotus momota), a representative bird of that Colombian area.

We finish the tour in the Cocora Valley to go to Cali, city in which we will spend the night in San Antonio Boutique Hotel to rest and prepare for the next day.

On day 3 of this tour we will change the climate, one of the wonders offered by the diversity of thermal floors that exist in Colombia: from the cold air that surrounds the mountains of Salento we will move to the warm climate of the Pacific region, where the San Cipriano Natural Reserve awaits us, a territory with 3 kilometers of vegetation, which has a river of crystalline waters that flow into the Pacific Ocean, located one hour from this reserve. In San Cipriano, more than 400 species of birds have been seen, which can be appreciated from the early hours of the morning, such as the arasari and the toucan pechigualdo, just to mention some of the birds typical of the area. The great biodiversity of this place amazes both locals and visitors, who will surely take away a unique experience and a magical memory for their countries of origin.

In the evening we will rest in the village of El Queremal, very close to the destination that will be waiting for us the next day: the farm 'El Descanso', located 55 kilometers from Cali, one of the best places in Colombia for bird watching. There, Dora Londoño, the owner of the place, takes care of hundreds of birds that fly between the mountainous area that becomes the ideal space where bird watching lovers arrive to appreciate many of the almost 500 species of birds that give even more life to the Valle del Cauca’s natural environment. Species such as the Barbetted Toucan (Semnornis ramphastinus), the Red-breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola jucunda), or the Pacific Ocean Bugle (Anisognathus notabilis), make this place the second destination with the greatest number of species in the Valle del Cauca department.

After the visit to 'El Descanso', we head to Alejandría farm, also known as 'the hummingbird's paradise'. This place has been home to more than 300 species of birds that enjoy the biodiversity of this environment at different times of the year. This is an ideal space to watch, at very short distances, different species of hummingbirds; here the birder can marvel at the diversity of colors, sizes of their tails and their beaks, while also enjoying woodpeckers, tanagers, sparrows, sylphs and tiles, which transit in this 15-hectare forest adorned by bromeliads, orchids and mosses that give life to this natural environment located in the western Colombian mountain range.

At the end of the day we return to San Antonio Boutique Hotel to rest and prepare for the last day of this tour.

(Plan A) On the second day we will take a tour of the village of Dapa, a few kilometers from Cali. There we will visit the Minga Ecolodge, a forest reserve crossed by the Bitaco River ideal for bird watching as it has more than 300 species, four of them endemic. Almost twenty species of hummingbirds and up to 30 species of tanagers, among which the multicolored tanager stands out, can be easily watched and photographed among this area.

(Plan B) On the second day we will take a tour of Tenerife, located in the central range of the Colombian Andean Mountains, an area that can reach temperatures ranging from 8°C to 21°C. This mountainous area is ideal for bird watching: species such as parrots, toucans, woodpeckers and other kinds of birds, some of them endemic, fly in this natural environment that allows us to appreciate the beauty of the birds throughout the day.

(Plan C) On the second day we will take a tour of the village of Pance, in the surroundings of Cali. There we will visit the El Topacio Environmental Education Center, a paradise bathed by waterfalls, rivers and streams, which is renowned for its abundant biodiversity, with numerous species of birds, reptiles, insects, flora and fauna, as well as more than 40 types of medicinal plants. A short distance from El Topacio, in the same village of Pance, are located Villa Cielo and Anahuac reserves. In those places and in just a few meters of walking, we will be able to meet with many species of birds such as ravens, tiles, the honey bee queen or the different species of tanagers that stand out with their exotic colors among the extensive vegetation of the area.

That will be our last stop before returning in the late afternoon to Cali, where we finish our tour.
